Among Jack’s dreams was to circumnavigate, heading west from San Francisco Bay across the Pacific. In 1906 he began building the 45′ ketch, Snark, named after a mythical creature in poem by Lewis Carrol. The cost of the boat was over four-times the planned budget, and in the end the vessel was poorly built and the voyage was unsuccessful. Upon his return to the Bay Area, Jack purchased a smaller yacht called the Roamer.
