Kodak No 1

Cameras of Ansel Adams

This is our Kodak Brownie No 1. with the auxiliary viewfinder.

This is Ansel Adams Kodak No 1 Brownie, which is at the George Eastman Museum. These were produced from 1901 to 1915, with post 1904 production having a grainier cover, so Ansel’s was at least 10 years old when he received it. Over a half million of these were sold.

Ansel’s camera has the auxiliary viewfinder, a 25 cent accessory, equal to about the cost of two rolls of film. He is shown holding the camera with the distinctive viewfinder, circa 1914 when he received it from his father.
